RE: Lightbulbs

Our fixtures eat 1383 bulbs like popcorn! Last one in the bedroom had about two hrs. burn time. Does anyone know of a LED replacement bulb?

RE: Has anyone had a Dometic Refridge quit due to the recall??

The one in our '04 Montana blew up the same as yours, but was still under warranty. I would yell as much as I could at Dometic and use one of the RV "Help Lines", too. If you are stuck with repairs, go the household fridge route. We did in a previous 5W and it worked great--it was frost-free and was larger to boot. If you boondock a lot, there might be a problem, but with ordinary use, an inverter and a couple of batteries should do you. You can pay for it all and have change left over vice a new RV refer.

RE: Star Choice Satellite - Mexico

We have the larger dish and have received Star Choice in every state in Mexico. Had some problems with side lobes in Baja, but by fiddling with it, the channels came in great. You might want to check with one of your local installers and see if the have a used dish they would sell you. We bought one on our last trip to Canada. Might want to have a spare LNB, too.

RE: Newmar Cypress?

When we were looking for a replacement 5W, we were amazed at the minimal CCC that some of the Cypress models had (about a 1000#s). Make sure you check the posted weights.

RE: Residency

Assuming you just want residency, I'd use SD. We are Escapees and have used Livingston RX for 14 years with their great mail service. However, now using SD and didn't have to pay a large sales tax with the new 5W and are saving $450/yr. on truck insurance. We use mydakotaaddress.com--Terri is great. Think your vote is "worth" more there, too.

RE: Frame damage and possible repair?

Can't imagine that it wouldn't be totalled unless they have insurance which pays them full replacement coverage. At a minimum they need to pull the front cap and check the hitchpin and cross frame for damage. Would imagine also that the springs and axles need to be replaced, too, or at least check for alignment. One one of our 5Ws we had an accident (the ground opened up and tried to swallow the 5W) and damage kept showing up for the next three years with the frame being brokem in a couple of places (hitchpin and along the right side near the door). The damages were repaired at the factory and never gave us any problems.

RE: New 5ver: Cardinal, Montana, Bighorn,Jayco Designer

We traded our '04 Montana for an '08 Cardinal. Had numerous major problems with the Montana--we had a lemon. think the quality of the Cardinal is about a half a star above the others and we spent a lot of time looking at all of the models you mentioned. A lot of time alone in a rig can be an eyeopener for sure. We're fulltimers and CCC and hitchpin weight was of prime importance to us as well as the floorplan. A great dealer is probably the most important consideration unless you are always on the road like we are.

RE: TX Registration Fees

Am an Escapee and had used TX for many years, but found it was cheaper in the long run to use South Dakota instead. Currently saving $450/yr. on my PU insurance. We use www.mydakotaaddress.com Good info there.

RE: When ya leaving? Where ya crossing?

Let's see? Right now will enter Mexico somewhere between Mexicali and Douglas and sometime between Oct 24th and Nov 15th. Will let you know better when time gets closer. Line of sight planning has always been my best suit! Would like to be in SMA for Day of the Dead, but---.

RE: dealer experience

We looked long and hard at the HH II. I used to sell RVs and the best deal I could get was 23% off the MSRP and that was from only two dealers. Couldn't justify paying what they wanted and couldn't see the claimed "high quality". They have Lippert frames like most of the others out there and any quality stuff costs extra e.g. carpert, tires, etc. But this was six months ago and times are harder---good luck on what ever rig you get.

RE: Washer/Dryer combo or stacked

DW loves our Splendide combo. She usually does a load everyday--put it in and forget it plus we still have the use of the DW closet.

RE: Laredo, TX to Tequisquiapan, Queretaro, MX

Ken, If you don't have Mike and Terri Church's book,"Travelers Guide to Mexican Camping", it is the bible for RVing in Mexico IMHO. It will answer most of the questions you have. Should be able to get it in most bookstores or go to www.rollinghomes.com

RE: What's the best form of 'money' to bring into MX

We have a couple of banks which has been handy since a few times one ATM card would work and the other wouldn't plus we could have a high daily limit if DW found something we really "needed"!

RE: Direct TV in MX ??

We have used StarChoice for years and have gotten a sufficient signal in every state in Mexico, The US and Canada, of course. Didn't have it when we went to Alaska, so I don't know how well it works there.

RE: Maxxair and Rain Sensing Fan-Tastic Fan

We have both and also had the FF on our last 5W. So far no problems with the FF on this 5W , but we did have a few minor ones with our old one, but nothing to write home about. Except for the cost (got the remote feature) we love the Maxxair in the bedroom--low speed runs quieter than the FF. No problems about the rain sensor failing and getting the bed wet. We got the smoke color to help cut down on the light.

RE: Slides Dragging On The Carpet

Find it amazing that Lippert makes a "carpet protector" to save the carpet from their poor design!! But most of us are stuck with Lippert frames (our last one had the frame break four times); we got a cheap desk pad floor protector and cut it up into 6" strips to put under the places where the s/o drags. The little prongs on the back side hold the plastic in place when the s/o moves. Remove them when you have the s/o in the extended position.

RE: Distance needed between bed rails and 5th wheel

Have nearly 7" and have banged the bedrail on the right side several times--not seriously but leaves paint behind and scratch marks. Mostly because of frame breaks on the last 5W, but a few times when everything was working OK.

RE: Trouble for RV industry!

Wasn't going to say anything, but can't help it. The last time we went through the gas crunch, we helped conserve by reducing the speed limit to 55mph. Besides saving fuel, I think that it would take the wind out of the speculators' sails. A bonus, the highways were safer, too. Saw on TV a few days ago that we have a 250 year supply of coal at our current usage rate if it were turned into gasoline and diesel. The current cost of transformation is $25/barrel (drumroll, please). Who is manipulating what and whom? (Why do the oil company ads now show their investment in solar, wind, hydrogen, etc.?)

RE: What would you have done?

Have had a couple of transmission failures where we needed help and got it. Also have helped tow a few times. Most help given is teaching folks how to back up their rigs. Generally, if you need help ask a SKP.

RE: Criteria for a long-term location!

Hope that someone finds the "perfect" place--no hurry as we still suffer from "hitch-itch" and aren't ready to put the 5W up on blocks (right now San Miguel de Allende is on top of our list). The comments regarding temps make us laugh. SOB in various places in the winter, we're dressed in Ts and shorts and the locals have parkas, scarves and gloves. They point at us and laugh and we point at them and laugh.
